Guide

How to measure your foot at home

Accurate foot measurements matter more than the size printed inside your old shoes. It takes two minutes with things you already have.

  1. 1

Grab paper, a pen and a ruler

Tape a sheet of A4 or letter paper to a hard floor so it can't slide, ideally against a wall.

  2. 2

    Trace your foot

Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall and your weight evenly distributed. Trace around your foot, keeping the pen vertical.

  3. 3

    Measure length and width

Measure from the wall (heel) to the tip of your longest toe for length, and across the widest part of the trace for width.

  4. 4

    Repeat for both feet

Feet are rarely identical. Measure both and use the larger measurement to pick your size.

  5. 5

    Measure in the evening

Feet swell slightly through the day, so measuring in the evening gives a more realistic, comfortable fit.

About this tool

A shoe size calculator that measures more than just length

Searching for a shoe size calculator online usually turns up a static chart you have to eyeball, guessing where your foot lands between rows. This tool works differently: enter your foot length and width, in inches or centimeters, and it works out your size for men, women, kids and toddlers, then converts it into US, UK, EU, AU/NZ, Mondopoint and centimeter equivalents at the same time. There's nothing to download and nothing to sign up for, just a measurement and an instant, side-by-side answer you can use whether you're buying adults' sneakers, a child's school shoes, or a toddler's first pair of walking shoes.

Length and width, because feet aren't just one number

Most size charts only account for length, which is why a shoe that's technically "your size" can still pinch. Adding a width measurement, taken across the widest part of your foot, lets the calculator flag whether you typically need a narrow, standard or wide fit. That distinction matters even more for brands like Clarks, which sell many styles across specific width fittings, and for anyone who's struggled to find a comfortable fit from length alone, adult or child. If you only have a length measurement handy, that's fine too, width is entirely optional.

Built for adults, kids and toddlers alike

Switching between the men's, women's and kids' options swaps in a completely different reference chart rather than just applying an offset, because a men's size 8 and a women's size 8 aren't the same foot length, and a toddler's size 8 is a different chart again. The kids' chart runs from toddler ("C") sizes through youth ("Y") sizes, so parents measuring a growing foot get the right numbers without needing a separate toddler shoe size calculator.

From everyday sneakers to running and climbing shoes

The size returned here is a true-to-measurement baseline, the size that matches your actual foot. From there, fit conventions shift by shoe type: running shoes are often bought half a size up to leave room for feet swelling on longer distances, while climbing shoes are typically fitted snug, sometimes a size or more below your everyday shoe size, for precision on the wall. Use the calculated size as your starting point, then adjust up or down based on what you're actually buying.

Can shoe size be estimated from height?

Height and foot length are loosely related, but not closely enough to replace a real measurement, two people of the same height can easily need different shoe sizes. If you've come across a height-based shoe size estimate elsewhere, treat it as a rough guess at best. Measuring your foot directly, as described below, takes about two minutes and gives a far more reliable result for adults and kids alike.

A reference for your favorite brands

Once you have your standard size, the results also show it converted for 11 popular brands, including Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Converse and Clarks, since a size that fits true at one brand can run large or small at another. It's a helpful starting point for shopping online, not a replacement for a specific brand's own size chart when one is available.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I find my shoe size from foot length?+

Measure your longest toe to your heel in centimeters or inches, then enter it into the calculator above. It matches your measurement to the closest US, UK, EU, AU/NZ and Mondopoint size, rounded up for a comfortable fit.

Are men's and women's shoe sizes the same?+

No. For the same foot length, women's US sizing runs about 1.5 sizes larger than men's US sizing. Our calculator uses separate men's, women's and kids' charts so the conversion is accurate for each.

What is Mondopoint sizing?+

Mondopoint is an international sizing standard based directly on foot length in millimeters. It's commonly referenced across Japan, Korea, China and some athletic and military footwear.

Why do shoe sizes vary between brands?+

There's no single global manufacturing standard, so brands and even individual shoe models use slightly different lasts (the foot-shaped mold). Treat any conversion, including ours, as a starting point and check the specific brand's chart when possible.

Should I round up or down between half sizes?+

Round up. A shoe that's slightly too big can be fixed with a thicker sock or insole, but a shoe that's too small can cause blisters and long-term foot problems.

How often should kids' shoe sizes be re-measured?+

Children's feet can grow half a size every 3-4 months. Re-measure length and width every few months, especially before buying school or sports shoes.

Does this work for toddlers, not just older kids?+

Yes. Selecting "Kids" uses a chart that starts at toddler ("C") sizes and runs through youth ("Y") sizes, so it covers a first walking shoe as well as an older child's sneaker.

Should I size up for running shoes?+

Many runners go about half a size above their everyday size, since feet swell slightly on longer runs. Use the calculated size as your baseline, then size up if the shoe will be used for distance running.

How is a climbing shoe size different from a street shoe size?+

Climbing shoes are usually fitted much snugger than everyday sneakers, often a size or more below your street shoe size, for precise footwork on rock. Treat the calculated size as a loose starting point rather than the exact size to buy.

Does this match Clarks sizing?+

Clarks generally sizes close to standard UK/EU charts but sells many styles across multiple width fittings. Use the calculated size and width estimate as a starting point, then check the specific Clarks style's own chart, since fit varies by last.

Can I estimate my shoe size from my height instead of measuring?+

Not reliably. Height and foot length are loosely correlated, but two people of the same height can have noticeably different foot sizes. A direct foot measurement, as described below, is far more accurate.
